Welcome to Room 15!

Hi! I’m Mrs. Curby! It is my pleasure to work with you and your child. I am a CSUN alumni. I am passionate about teaching and finding fun and creative ways to engage my students while maintaining high academic expectations. I love all things STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering,  ARTS and Math. I implement a multidimensional approach to provide an effective educational experience. I love to include a variety of learning modalities such as video, auditory, kinesthetic for whole body learning and collaborative learning. Given that every student learns differently, embracing a variety of learning modalities will help fit the need of every student. My ultimate goal is to instill a love of reading and for each of my students to reach their academic success. First grade is close to my heart. There are so many wonderful and new challenging things your children will learn this year. They will grow as readers, writers, and thinkers! It’s going to be an exciting year full of fun, learning and lots of adventures.

A Little About ME:

My loves include my sweet husband, two teen boys, my family and friends, our fluffy apricot poodle, and our sweetheart pug. I love spending time with my family on hikes, movie watching with zebra popcorn and relaxing at home. I also love all things Disney and Disneyland, Dreamwork Trolls, favorite colors are purple and blue, love snuggling up to read, Target and Starbucks runs are always a blast, yoga for strength, relaxation and mindfulness, and creative art projects such as drawing and painting.

Goals for this year:

  • To make learning meaningful, challenging, and engaging
  • To instill a love of learning in your child
  • To create a safe, nurturing classroom environment
  • To promote a classroom community of inclusivity and kindness
  • To maintain open communication between parents and teacher

Academic Expectations:

  • Students will come prepared to class and have good digital citizenship.
  • Students will complete daily class assignments with their best effort.
  • Students will meet or exceed the Common Core State Standards for first grade in all areas by the end of the year.

Behavioral Expectations🐬:

All students should arrive on time and ready to learn. Please follow the 3 Be's:

  • Be respectful and KIND. (To self, each other and adults)
  • Be safe. (having self control and making good choices are important )
  • Be responsible. (learning good organization, accountability and having a good attitude about school will help your child succeed)
Also we believe in the golden rule : treat others as you would like to be treated. I tell all my kids, "Kindness starts with you. It starts in your heart, then your mind and finally in what you say." In our class we are family and we treat each other with respect and kindness.

How Parents can Help:🏡
The loveliest flowers usually have the best gardener -- and that’s you! Our relationship is vital!  Staying involved in your child’s education is the key to a successful year. Engage your child in conversation about his/her day. Another way to stay involved is to check your child’s homework folder given out on Monday's to be returned on Friday morning. Folders may be packed with school assignments, homework, projects, flyers, notices from the office, as well as notes from their teacher. Please stay informed and consider volunteering your time in our classroom and at our school . Become a member of Darby PTA. I will have more information in the first few weeks of school on how to become involved in the classroom as well. Be sure to sign in to your schoology PARENT PORTAL account too. NONSENSE WORD RESOURCE
Check out this great video about Nonsense word practice to help parents understand how to help prepare students during DIBELS testing and overall practice for strengthening auditory phonemic awareness skills. I will send home monthly Nonsense word practice to help strengthen these skills. Please begin working on this as soon as possible as we have 3 DIBELs tests in the year: Beginning of the year, Middle of the year and End of year.
